Engineer For the Week

An offering by Facebook Engineer For the Week

Facebook's Engineer for the Week (EFTW) program aims to demystify the world of tech, empowering teens to build a working tech product while developing computer science skills.

Participant engage in Scrum, an engineering framework, to build tech products that make a positive impact on a social topic of their choice.

During their project sprints, participants develop problem solving, teamwork and design abilities as they acquire skills in engineering and technology.

EFTW is an introductory engineering experience for youth ages 13+ and can be facilitated by any school, after-school or non-profit staff. The program seeks to reach youth historically underrepresented in
STEM and increase access in environments where engineering and CS
exposure is limited.

PROGRAM TIMELINE
Each sprint cycle takes approximately 10 – 15 hours and includes:
• Prep (3–5 hours) – Learn the fundamentals of a sprint cycle and ideate on a product
• Sprint (5–7 hours) – Develop technical skills and build, test and iterate on a prototype
• Finish (1–2 hours) – Reflect on the process and submit projects

Whether you are a teacher, program coordinator, or group leader, you can bring EFTW to your community. You (and your students!) don’t need any experience in computer science to participate in our program. We will provide you with the resources and support you need.

By becoming a facilitator, you will offer students the opportunity to learn about engineering while building a chatbot or game. You will offer them the opportunity to engineer a better world!
