Genetics of the Senses for the Elementary and Middle School Science Classroom
Time required: at least 1 hour
A scientist from the UNMC Munroe Meyer Institute will come to your classroom to do an interactive demonstration to teach students how the senses of taste and smell are different and how they interact. They will also point out the subtle difference between "taste" and "flavor". Depending on time permitted, the lesson can be expanded to also explore the sense of sight, explain the phenomenon of color blindness, and have a demonstration using Ishihara plates.
Must contact us at email@example.com to schedule a classroom visit with a scientist. Please note “STEM Activity Request: Senses Activity” on the email subject line. Requires at least 2.5-week notice. Teachers making the request must include their Name, School, Grade level, Classroom Size, and 2-3 potential dates/times to schedule the visit to the classroom. A UNMC scientist will respond with availability.
